Care of Badges
An X-ray badge is intended for use at one location only. It is important to keep badges away from heat and excessive moisture. Badges should not be worn outside the workplace or during medical procedures.
It is recommended that badges are collected at the end of each shift or work day and stored in a central location away from radiation sources. This will avoid having to replace badges which are lost or damaged.
How To Wear A BadgeClip the badge to your work uniform, close to the body at chest level with the label side facing away from the body. This location is important because your badge measures what is known as "whole body" dose - the radiation dosage received by the blood-forming organs of the torso. Your badge is sensitive only to ionizing radiation. Exposure to electromagnetic radiation, such as what comes from a microwave oven or a computer screen, will not affect your badge.
The badge should be worn under any protective covering (lead aprons, coveralls, etc.) for a more representative dose assessment. If using a lead apron, it is a good health physics practice to wear a second badge outside the apron at the collar level.
Rings - Should be worn on the part of the finger closest to and facing the direction of the source of radiation.
Pregnant women - should be issued a whole body fetal badge, which typically is worn over the fetal area. If a lead apron is worn, the badge should be placed under the apron over the fetal area to measure any dose that the apron may have failed to shield. It is recommended that a second dosimeter be worn outside the apron at collar or chest level. A monthly monitoring frequency is required for the entire gestation period to ensure the safety of the developing fetus.
Control Badges
Each shipment will contain one Control Badge envelope. There is no extra charge for the Control Badge - it is a required part of dosimetry service and is included in the cost. The control badge should be stored in your office and kept away from the X-ray equipment, in a radiation-free area to ensure effective and valid detection of transit or background radiation. Under no circumstance should a control badge be assigned to personnel. The Control Badge must be returned along with the badges from the same monitoring period.
Mailing Procedures
Subscribers will automatically receive a new set of film every three months (unless other special arrangements have been made or a fetal badge is issued), along with a pre-printed envelope used to send the used film back to us for processing. Always continue wearing the badges you have until the replacement film arrives.
Approximately four weeks after we receive your used film, you'll receive a printed dosimetry report with your results. The report will contain an explanation of the results and how to interpret them. In the even that your dosage exceeds the safety limit for occupational exposure to radiation, you'll be alerted by phone immediately, as soon as your badges are processed.
All reports should be saved as a permanent record of office safety. If you require a replacement copy, please call Customer Support at (800) 359-9686. There is a charge of $10.00 per report for duplicate copies.
Badge Roster Changes And Lost Badges
Please call Customer Support whenever you need to make a change to your badge roster. Don't wait until the end of the monitoring period to let us know about a change; call us right away with any changes or questions you may have so that we can keep your account current.
If a badge is lost, you may receive a replacement badge to fill out the remainder of the monitoring period for a small fee.
